Connor Kilpatrick, Writer/Supervising Producer: That was a months-long conversation and disagreements and feelings. Everyone had opinions on whether it should happen or should not happen, should it be on-screen, should it be off-screen, should we do the story where Sheldon walks in on them, and how traumatizing that is to a child.
Steve Holland, Executive Producer/Showrunner/Writer: We were figuring it out, and there was a lot of talk about what was going to happen. It’s tricky, because we felt a little boxed in since we said in “Big Bang” that he has an affair with a bottle-blond waitress, but “Young Sheldon” had become its own show, and George especially had become his own character.
Jeremy Howe, Director/Writer/Co-Executive Producer: I felt creatively it made the most sense for them to have the affair. And not that I wanted to write George having an affair, but it presented a very unique opportunity to find a family reconciling after something likethat. It would have been interesting to actually go through with the affair. We could have creatively come up with something fairly interesting, I think, if we did go down that road.
Connor Kilpatrick: I really didn’t want George to go through with it. I just thought it was going to be really hard to redeem him for the viewer.
Jim Parsons, Narrator/”Adult Sheldon”/Executive Producer: Whatever they would’ve wanted to do with George and Brenda would’ve been fine with me because I really do trust the writers implicitly. Countless times over my years on both shows, I saw the brilliance and the way they dealt with topics and characters and people. And just to give more credit to them, there were those moments where, on paper, it was like, “Oh, that’s . . . I don’t like that!” And then it would play brilliantly. I guess there’s an alternate universe where the George/Brenda storyline goes differently, but I’ve not personally heard any complaints about it. ‘Course, I’m not on the chat boards or message boards or whatever the hell the kids call it. [Author’s note: It’s called Reddit, Jim. 😉 ].
The decision to go through with a physical affair or not would come down to Lorre, Molaro, and Holland. And even that wasn’t clear-cut.
Steve Holland: Chuck is still upset to this day that we didn’t actually have them sleep together. He feels like it was a cop out and a little bit bullsh–ty.
Steve Molaro: He did. But he also would go back and forth on it. Not as much as Holland and I were always nervous about it. Chuck would be leaning toward a physical affair happening, and we were probably leaning away from it happening, but it was never a fight. We would discuss the ins and outs of the implications and what it would mean and how it would affect seeing George later. It would have been a bold choice, and there’s a world where it could have happened. It almost did. We talked about it and we talked about it and we talked about it, and what was the show going to feel like if we did.
Chuck Lorre: I have very mixed feelings about going down that road and bailing out of it. There’s an inherent commandment in network television to make the characters likable. It goes way, way back to the birth of television that the characters have to be likable. Human beings make mistakes, though. And to the extent that you don’t let your characters make mistakes — and pay for them — the Judeo-Christian ethic is at work; we pay for our sins, we surely do on television, unless you’re Dexter [laughs]. You know, the occasional characters come along that don’t seem to have any karmic residue from their insanity, but for the rest of us, there’s a price to be paid. And we did not do that. We did not go down that road. We certainly skirted around the edges of it. But they did have an emotional affair. He cheated on his wife in his heart.
