Some premises sell themselves. An all-woman heavy metal band gets stranded in a town packed with cannibals, vampires, a warlock and a werewolf. I didn’t need a synopsis. I needed snacks.
That’s what makes Devour so frustrating. Director Scott B. Hansen and screenwriter Desirée Hansen hand themselves a gloriously ridiculous B-movie setup. KateLynn E. Newberry leads the cast alongside Heidi Shepherd of Butcher Babies and Alex Lucchesi. Everything I wanted was right there. Instead I watched a great idea slip away.
The Monsters Worth Touching

Devour is at its best when its monsters feel like something you could reach out and touch. The practical effects are the film’s best friend. When a creature is physically in the room it has weight. It takes up space. I have something real to look at.
Those were the moments I sat up. They felt like the movie the premise promised. There is something wonderful about watching a ridiculous monster come to life through practical craftsmanship. Devour occasionally remembers that.
Where It Lost Me
Then the film keeps walking away from those strengths. Too often Devour leans on imagery that looked AI-generated to me. I can’t tell you exactly how those shots were made. I can tell you how they played. They looked like they belonged to a different movie and pulled me straight out of this one.
This isn’t about money. Horror has always run on tight budgets and stubborn creativity. Some of the genre’s best monsters were built in garages. A cheap creature I can believe in beats a slick one I can’t.
What stings is watching Devour set aside the thing it does well. Every shift from physical effects to artificial-looking spectacle made the world feel less solid and less like one piece. The town stopped feeling dangerous. It started feeling assembled.
A metal band against a town full of monsters should be loud and gross and joyful. Devour gets there in flashes. Mostly it settles for something flatter.
Devour is available on digital platforms beginning October 13 from Epic Pictures and Dread.
Luna Verdict: Devour had the monsters. It just kept forgetting to use them.
