What to Watch on Peacock This Halloween: Crystal Lake, Classic Slashers and Hidden Gems

master mentalism tricks

Peacock spent the back half of October with a Voorhees in the house. Crystal Lake, the A24-produced Friday the 13th prequel, dropped all eight episodes on October 15, and Peacock says the series racked up 1.3 billion minutes watched in its first 11 days, its fourth-biggest scripted original debut. NBCUniversal also reports it ranked No. 3 among streaming original series on Nielsen’s chart for the week of October 19.

Those are the company’s numbers, and they mostly tell us a lot of people pressed play on Linda Cardellini as Pam Voorhees. The more useful news for Halloween weekend is what’s sitting around the show, if you know where to dig.

Start With Crystal Lake, Then Go Back to 1980

What to Watch on Peacock This Halloween: Crystal Lake, Classic Slashers and Hidden Gems

Crystal Lake comes from creator and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane and follows Pam in the grief-soaked year after her son Jason drowns at camp. William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins and Gwendolyn Sundstrom co-star, and the series pulls in familiar faces from the original film, including Officer Dorf. Victor Miller, who created Pamela Voorhees for the 1980 film, served as an executive producer. He died on August 31, just over six weeks before the series premiered.

The obvious move is to pair it with the source. Friday the 13th, Part 2 and Part III are all on Peacock, which means you can watch the prequel and then see where all that grief was always headed. The original holds up as a nasty little whodunit, and if you somehow don’t know how it ends, protect that ignorance with your life. Part 2 is the one with the sack-headed Jason. Part III is the one with the hockey mask, and, if you’re watching it flat on your TV, a lot of things being pointed directly at your face for no reason.

A Choose-Your-Own-Timeline Halloween Marathon

Sidney Prescott in Scream

Here’s the weird gift Peacock is offering this year. Its franchise guide doesn’t list John Carpenter’s 1978 original, but you can watch almost every theory of what happened next, plus one sequel that refused to play along.

Halloween II (1981) picks up the same night and leans hard into hospital corridors. Halloween III: Season of the Witch ditches Michael Myers completely for killer masks and a commercial jingle that will live in your head rent-free until Thanksgiving. Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007) and Halloween II (2009) rebuild the mythology from the trailer park up. Then David Gordon Green’s Halloween (2018) and Halloween Kills throw out every sequel and start over from 1978, and Kills is available in its extended cut too.

Three competing Michael Myers continuities and one wonderfully strange anthology detour. Few horror franchises have worked harder to disagree with themselves.

The rest of the slasher shelf is stacked. The first three Scream films are in Peacock’s horror collection, though some listings tag the sequels as part of the Starz add-on, so check your plan before committing to a marathon. That’s the stretch where Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson invented the self-aware slasher and then kept arguing with themselves about it. Peacock also has four Purge films and the first three Paranormal Activity movies, if you want your dread to come from a kitchen camera at 3 AM.

The Universal Monsters Live Here

Bela Lugosi as Dracula

This is the corner of Peacock that deserves more attention than it gets. Universal’s monster films are the foundation of American horror, and several are streaming.

Tod Browning’s Dracula (1931) is stiff in places and still unbeatable whenever Bela Lugosi is simply standing in a doorway. James Whale’s Frankenstein (1931) gave us Boris Karloff’s flat-headed creature, an image so permanent it’s practically public property. Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein (1935) is widely considered the better film: funnier, stranger and more openly sad, with Elsa Lanchester’s hissing bride on screen for only a few minutes and somehow iconic forever. The Invisible Man (1933) gives Claude Rains a gloriously unhinged voice performance from under a lot of bandages. The Wolf Man is there too, for anyone who wants Lon Chaney Jr.’s tragic lycanthrope on a dark, rainy night.

If your Halloween crowd thinks “old movie” means boring, start them on Bride. It runs about 75 minutes and has a laboratory sequence that every mad scientist since has been copying.

Modern Picks and Hidden Gems

Get Out

Blumhouse titles make up much of Peacock’s modern horror lineup, and a few stand out. Get Out remains the rare horror movie that gets sharper on a rewatch. Freaky and Happy Death Day are Christopher Landon’s best argument that a slasher can be funny without winking itself to death. Mike Flanagan’s Hush is a lean, scary home invasion movie that runs barely over 80 minutes, perfect for a late slot.

For something less obvious, go to Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. The Endless and Synchronic are both on Peacock, low-budget, mind-bending and worth more than a dozen bigger-budget sequels. Ti West’s The Sacrament is a grim found footage take on a cult compound that sticks with you.

The deep cuts are where this library gets fun. Bob Clark’s Black Christmas (1974) wrote the rulebook Halloween would make famous. Sleepaway Camp has one of the most notorious endings of the ’80s, so don’t look it up. Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight is a gooey, gleeful siege movie with Billy Zane chewing every inch of the boarding house. And Anna Biller’s The Love Witch is a gorgeous Technicolor-style seduction horror that looks like nothing else on the service.

Horror-Comedy, TV and Family Options

Chucky zack featured

For laughs between screams, Shaun of the Dead, Krampus, Better Watch Out and Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs are all here. That last one is angrier and funnier than it gets credit for.

On the TV side, Don Mancini’s Chucky series and the Peacock original Teacup are both streaming. Plenty of households will also queue up The Office Halloween episodes or Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Halloween Heists, the holiday tradition for people who don’t actually like scary things.

For younger viewers, or anyone who wants October without the blood, there’s Casper, The Munsters, Monster Family and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Little Monsters (1989) sends Fred Savage under the bed with Howie Mandel’s gleefully rotten monster, and the animated The Addams Family (2019) is an easy gateway to the family’s macabre sense of humor.
