Book adaptations slated for book to movie or TV releases for 2022 are starting to set release dates. Here are all the Book to Movies or TV for 2022 coming soon that have been announced so far.
Note that this list only includes titles that have been affirmatively announced for 2022 or where there’s a high likelihood of it being released (such as if it’s in the process of filming). I’ll of course be updating this list as titles get slated into release dates or other announcements are made.
For book adaptation that are in development (but may not necessarily happen at all or won’t happen for quite some time), see Books to Film section.
Also, see here for the 2021 Books to Film list.
Deep Water (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022
Format: Movie
The adaptation of Deep Water by Patricia Highsmith with star Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. It was originally slated for January 2022, but appears to have been pushed back. It’s still expected to be released in 2022.
Death on the Nile (IMDB)
Release Date: February 22
Format: Movie
Kenneth Branagh is reprising his role as Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective in Death on the Nile. His previous outing as Poirot, Murder on the Orient Express, also released by Fox, grossed over $100 million domestically and close to $250 million internationally.
I was a little underwhelmed by the Murder on the Orient Express movie, though it was beautifully shot. I thought the pacing was a little off, and the tone of it was a little dull. But I love, love, love Agatha Christie, so I’m happy to give a different movie another shot.
Gal Gadot, Tom Bateman, Arnie Hammer, Annette Bening and Letitia Wright will also make appearances in Death on the Nile.
In Death on the Nile, Poirot is crusing along the Nile (obviously) when a newlywed heiress is found dead. With a ship full of people who have reason to dislike her, Poirot has his work cut out for him as he investigates her death.

The Nightingale (IMDB)
Release Date: December 23, 2022
Format: Movie
Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale is finally, FINALLY making the jump to the big screen.
Book lovers have been clamoring for this adaptation for so long, so I really hope they do it justice. Talented real-life sisters Dakota Fanning and Elle Fanning are set to star in the movie, so I think that bodes well for it.
It was originally in pre-production in March 2020, but it got put on halt as movies around the world were put on pause. But at least you know they were serious about getting this movie off the ground, so I’m hopeful this one will actually be released in 2021.
The Wonder (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022
Format: Movie
First Look at Florence Pugh in The Wonder
Emma Donoghue’s The Wonder is is post-production (as of late 2021), so a 2022 release for this movie starring Florence Pugh is expected.
From IMDB: “Set in The Irish Midlands in 1862, the story follows a young girl who stops eating but remains miraculously alive and well. English nurse Lib Wright is brought to a tiny village to observe eleven-year old Anna O’Donnell. Tourists and pilgrims mass to witness the girl who is said to have survived without food for months. Is the village harbouring a saint ‘surviving on manna from heaven’ or are there more ominous motives at work?”

Persuasion (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022 (Estimated)

Netflix’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion began filming in May 2021, which means it will mostly likely have a release date in late 2021 or (more likely) sometime in 2022.
Dakota Johnson will star as protagonist Anne Elliot. The male lead will be played by Cosmo Jarvis (as Captain Frederick Wentworth).
The cast also includes other notable names such as Richard E. Grant, Henry Golding and Suki Waterhouse.
The Stars at Noon (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022
Format: Movie
The Stars at Noon by Denis Johnson is getting a movie adaptation that will star Robert Pattinson and Margaret Qualley.
From the Publisher: “Set in Nicaragua in 1984, The Stars at Noon is a story of passion, fear, and betrayal told in the voice of an American woman whose mission in Central America is as shadowy as her surroundings. Is she a reporter for an American magazine as she sometimes claims, or a contact person for Eyes of Peace? And who is the rough English businessman with whom she becomes involved? As the two foreigners become entangled in increasingly sinister plots, Denis Johnson masterfully dramatizes a powerful vision of spiritual bereavement and corruption.”

Based off the book by Don Delilo, the White Noise adaptation will be directed by Noah Baumbach and will star Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. Baumbach is Gerwig’s husband, and he previously directed Adam Driver in A Marriage Story.
The movie will be available to stream on Netflix.
Killers of the Flower Moon (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022
Format: Movie (Apple Original Film)
Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann is a non-fictional book. From IMDB: “Osage tribe in the United States are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s sparking a major F.B.I. investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover.”
The movie adaptation has been in the works for some time, but appears to be in post-production as of early 2022, so a 2022 release seems likely. Martin Scorsese is directing, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro starring.
Pinnochio (Stop-Motion Animated) (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022
Format: Movie
Guillermo del Toro‘s spin on the classic tale of Pinnochio (originally authored by Carlo Collodi in 1883) is expected to hit theaters in 2022. Note that the original Pinnochio story is quite different from the Disney version, so I would expect something a little darker than the story you may be familiar with.

Pinnochio (Disney Live Action) (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022
Format: Movie (Disney Plus)
No, that’s not a typo. There are TWO Pinnochio movies that are currently slated for a 2022 release. It sounds like they will be fairly different stories though. This one is the Disney version, directed by Robert Zemekis.
The Power (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022 (Estimated)
Format: Limited Series (Amazon Studios)
Amazon’s The Power limited series adaptation is currently in post-production as of November 2021, so a 2022 release seems likely.

The Time Traveler’s Wife (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022 (Estimated)
Format: Limited Series (HBO)
An HBO series adaptation of The Time Traveler’s Wife began filming in early 2021, so I’m guessing it’ll be released late 2021 or more likely sometime in 2022. It’s been reported to be a priority project for HBO, and it stars Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones) and Theo James (Divergent, Sanditon).

Kindred (IMDB)
Release Date: 2022 or 2023 (Estimated)
Format: Limited Series on FX
It’s possible this will be closer to 2023, but as of 2021, the Kindred FX Series is in pre-production. That seems to indicate that a 2022 release may be possible. The series will star Mallori Johnson and is set to be directed by Janicza Bravo.
From the Hollywood Reporter: In Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, Dana is “a young Black woman and aspiring writer who has left her life of familial obligation and moved to Los Angeles. But before she can get settled into her new home, she finds herself being violently pulled back and forth in time to a 19th century plantation with which she and her family are most surprisingly and intimately linked. An interracial romance threads through her past and present, and the clock is ticking as she struggles to confront the secrets she never knew ran through her blood.”
So, that’s what’s on the docket so far. A lot of these titles were originally slated for 2021 and were pushed to 2022 for what were most likely pandemic-related reasons. There are also some adaptations that are currently slated for 2021, but will most likely get pushed to 2022. I’ll update this list if that happens.
