Great Movie It Succeeded: The Mummy (1999)

1999’s The Mummy had a terrific cast with great chemistry, a fun spirit of adventure, and good scares. The sequel, The Mummy Returns, though not quite as great, brought back all the key players and director Stephen Sommers. But when The Mummy returned a second time in 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Sommers was a no-show, replaced by The Fast and the Furious’ Rob Cohen, and co-star Rachel Weisz — who was so great with franchise leading man Brendan Fraser — swapped out for Maria Bello. Plus, instead of their Rick and Evelyn being sexy monster hunters, they’re got an adult son! The vibes were off right from the start. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor only bore a passing resemblance to Fraser’s other Mummy movies. Keep this one buried at the bottom of your streaming queue.
