But in order to exploit that idea, you need a comic actor who reads like a nebbish, so that when they suddenly transform into Ethan Hunt, it catches us off guard —and when they’re in awkward mode, they can do some actual physical comedy.(Think about howNobodyused Bob Odenkirk, for example. That’s what you need.)

So of courseHeart of Stone’s creators cast Wonder Woman in thatpart. That might be whyStonedrops its one clever idea about 40 minutes in and becomes a rote blockbuster about artificial intelligence, essentially mining the same general concepts asMission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning without Tom Cruise’s gonzo showmanship or any of the thoughtful commentary on digital versus practical effects. (InHeart of Stone, “The Heart” A.I. is treated like an uncomplicated force for good, and the action is, fittingly but depressingly, mostly CGInonsense.)
