Through the years, James Cameron’s attitude toward this movie has varied from pretending it doesn’t exist to openly mocking it. It’s also the only movie of his career that was severely compromised creatively —and it shows. Some of the gore effects are better than they should be in this level of grindhouse fare, and Lance Henriksen gives his all to the role of the local police chief, but otherwise this does not really distinguish itself in any way from the many other Jaws knockoffs of its era. It certainly doesn’t play like the work of some undiscovered genius on the rise. Still, there are undeniable similarities between this and many of Cameron’s later, better movies. In fact, Piranha II and Avatar 2 are about the exact same thing: The beauty and danger of underwater life (not to mention aquatic creatures that can magically fly out of water).

Michelle Yeoh falls into a multiverse of madness when she learns that she is the only one who can stop a malevolent being that wants to destroy all of existence.Frankly, I was a little disappointed that the first chapter spentsomuch time establishing its incredibly fun mythology only for the second and third parts to basically abandon it in favor of the more personal aspects of its story.

Still, making something this big and bold, and so sillyandsincere all at once, is no simple feat. Plus,The GooniesandIndiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’s Ke Huy Quan returns with his biggest, juiciest role in decades playing Yeoh’s put-upon husband. He’s wonderful here; I hope this is the beginning of a longcomeback.
