The original tracks from Daisy Jones and The Six’s album Aurora aren’t the only songs that appear in the new Prime Video series about the band. Embedded in the sepia-toned and whiskey-soaked scenes, there lie tracks by very real artists who graced stages and airwaves in the ’70s—and some even earlier—from The Byrds to Carole King. That can be credited to music supervisor Frankie Pine (Magic Mike, Nashville), who helped nail down the vintage feel of the series with some well-curated ditties.
There are also other original songs written for the show and performed by the actors in their roles that don’t appear on Aurora; so for anyone hoping for early Dunne Brothers deep cuts, you’re in luck. Those tracks are also the brainchild of Daisy Jones’ chief songwriter and producer Blake Mills, who has worked with artists including Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes, Phoebe Bridgers, The Rolling Stones, and many more. Plus, there are even a few covers sprinkled throughout the series, with the Dunnes and Simone Jackson putting their own spin on tunes from the era.
“Very early on, we said that we wanted to showcase ’70s music, so we have our band and all their original songs, but then everywhere around them, the music of the time is just unbelievable, right?” Scott Neustadter, Daisy Jones co-showrunner and executive producer, tells ELLE.com.
“Stevie Wonder is doing this thing, and then you have Marvin Gaye is doing this thing and Curtis Mayfield is doing this thing, and then you have this unbelievable punk rock is coming and disco is happening and it’s just an explosion of music.”
Surprisingly, even though the story is heavily influenced by Fleetwood Mac, the band’s music doesn’t appear in the series—until episode 9.
“The one thing that we all agreed on was that Fleetwood Mac does not exist in our world. There’s no Fleetwood,” Neustadter says with a laugh. “We can’t do it. It’s too close and you’d get taken out of it and we shouldn’t do it.” But when their editor opened episode 9 with “Gold Dust Woman,” “it had such power, it was so amazing,” Neustadter recalls. They still tried to convince themselves not to use the song, but “ultimately we were like, ‘It’s just perfect.’”
It’s unclear how the members of Fleetwood Mac feel about Daisy Jones & The Six, but at least they did approve the usage of their song in the series. “And now I’m very curious if anyone in Fleetwood Mac ever watches our show, what they think about it,” Neustadter says. Same here.
And if you were curious about the show’s main title theme song, that’s “Dancing Barefoot” by Patti Smith.
