Blumhouse hasn’t had a stellar year at the movies, but maybe they will do better in the gaming world. The production company teased six of its games in a Monday video, ranging from a rudimentary-looking farming simulator to a 3D survival game.
The Hollywood Reporter lists the games and a brief description of each. The most interesting might be Project C, co-designed by director Brandon Cronenberg (Possessor).
It’s no surprise that the video game market has been declining post-pandemic. It’s nothing to panic about, but there is a sizable dip, almost down in revenue to 2020 numbers. Financial Times claims that gamers just don’t have a variety of consoles to choose from. There is PS5, Xbox and Switch. They also note that these devices have a buying cap, or they reach a peak and there is no afterlife unless they go on sale.
Furthermore online gaming distribution service Steam has even taken a dip in online sales since 2021. It could be that running games on a computer requires one with adequate speed and those can cost thousands. With American inflation surging people are choosing other forms of entertainment, or food.
Blumhouse Games might have a chance to survive in this downturned market if the games are any good. Hopefully, the hobbled success of their movie brand is no indication of what their gaming department will do. Sleep Awake comes from developer Eyes Out and game designers Cory Davis (Spec Ops: The Line) and Robin Finck (Nine Inch Nails). The first-person psychedelic horror game takes place in the distant future and follows Katja as she deals with dangerous otherworldly forces.
A creation of Vermila Studios, Crisol: Theater of Idols is a first-person horror adventure set in a terrifying version of Spain where statues of saints spring to life.
Grave Seasons hails from developer Perfect Garbage. This pixelated farming and town simulation game is set in Ashenridge, where one of the residents is a supernatural serial killer.
Created by developer Playmestudio, The Simulation focuses on a retired game designer whose only evidence for a crime is a never-before-seen horror game.
Project C is from developer Half Mermaid Productions, in addition to game designers Sam Barlow (Her Story) and Brandon Cronenberg (Possessor). The concept is described as twisted and heartbreaking.”
