Every haunted attraction runs on one agreement. The people lunging out of the dark are pretending and the bodies sprawled across the floor will get up and go home at closing. Slayground, the new film from writer and director Jeremy Saulnier, starts by breaking that agreement in the ugliest way available. A24 released the official trailer this morning, giving us a closer look at the Halloween thriller previously known as October.
According to A24’s synopsis, the story opens on the night of October 24 with a mass casualty event inside a haunted attraction. Scare actor “Metal Mike” Graves wakes up among the bodies of his coworkers with no memory of how any of it happened. A statewide manhunt follows. Mike starts digging for the truth while facing the possibility that the trail leads straight back to him.
Why Saulnier Fits This Nightmare

That premise lands differently with Jeremy Saulnier’s name on it. Green Room trapped a punk band in a backwoods Oregon club with a room full of skinheads, and its violence never felt like choreography. People got hurt clumsily and stayed hurt. I still think about how little that film cared about making a wound look cool.
That is my read on his track record rather than a prediction about Slayground, since all anyone has right now is a synopsis and a trailer. Still, the setup is fascinating in his hands. A haunted attraction is a building engineered to make fake death look convincing. Saulnier has spent his career making death on screen feel sudden and stupid and permanent, and I want to see what happens when those two ideas share a hallway.
The Cast, the Score and a January Halloween

The ensemble includes Cory Michael Smith, Chase Sui Wonders, Sophie Wilde, James Badge Dale, Stephen Root, Imogen Poots, Young Mazino, Chris Sullivan, Stanley Simons, Matty Matheson and Macon Blair. Poots and Blair both appeared in Green Room, and Blair’s history with Saulnier runs back to Blue Ruin. Slayground features music by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. That is not a pairing that suggests anyone involved wants you comfortable.
As Vivian Thorne reported yesterday, Slayground hits theaters January 29, 2027. So a movie that kicks off in late October arrives three months after the last plastic skeleton goes on clearance. It’s an odd bit of scheduling. Then again, January has a way of making a cold and mean thriller feel right at home.
