Billy Eichner is standing by Bros following a disappointing opening weekend at the box office.
Despite rave reviews and a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film grossed only $4.8 million following its debut last week, giving it a fourth-place start on the weekend chart.
Although its opening weekend wasn’t what was expected, Billy says he’s still encouraged after sneaking into a sold-out showing.
“Last night I snuck in and sat in the back of a sold out theater playing BROS in LA,” Billy wrote on Twitter. “The audience howled with laughter start to finish, burst into applause at the end, and some were wiping away tears as they walked out.”
Last night I snuck in and sat in the back of a sold out theater playing BROS in LA. The audience howled with laughter start to finish, burst into applause at the end, and some were wiping away tears as they walked out. It was truly magical. Really. I am VERY proud of this movie.

Billy also noted the wide-ranging reaction to the film, highlighting that Rolling Stone put Bros on the list of the best comedies of the 21st century — while some theaters didn’t even want to play the trailer because of its gay content.
“That’s just the world we live in, unfortunately. Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore etc, straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros,” he said. “And that’s disappointing but it is what it is.”

Billy added that he’s still holding out hope for the movie in the weeks to come, and encouraged others to go see it in theaters.
“Everyone who ISN’T a homophobic weirdo should go see BROS tonight! You will have a blast!” Billy wrote.
He continued, “And it *is* special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on a big screen, esp for queer folks who don’t get this opportunity often. I love this movie so much. GO BROS!!! ️.”
