Moana Live-Action Remake Release Date Announcement
IDK about you, but I’m SO excited about the live-action remake of Moana. A Disney movie with a whole cast of Pacific Islander actors? As a Samoan woman, I feel like I’ve been waiting for this my whole life!
Well, Dwayne Johnson shared an update on exactly how much longer we’ll have to wait.
In an Instagram post, he shared a quote from Moana: “Sometimes our strengths lie beneath the surface. Far beneath in some cases.”
The Maui actor said he was “humbled” and “excited” to share the release date of the upcoming film. We can expect the movie to hit theaters on June 27, 2025.
“It’s my privilege to share our legends, songs, and dance of our Polynesian culture with all of you and your families,” he concluded.
Dwayne previously shared that he’d be reprising the role of Maui and serving as an executive producer. He said the character meant a lot to him as Maui was partially inspired by his late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia. “How deep this story is for me, because in a way, when I bring Maui to life, I’m doing it in the spirit of my grandfather.”
Auli’i Cravalho — who voiced Moana in the original — recently announced she will not be playing the character again, but she is an executive producer. “I am truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, to honor our incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that helped inspire her story.”
We’ll be sure to let you know if there are any more updates!
