Nancy Meyers broke her silence after her ex-husband, fellow director Charles Shyer, died at the age of 83.
“Charles Shyer 1941-2024 💔,” Meyers, 75, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, December 29, alongside two throwback photos from an unidentified movie set.
Meyers and Shyer were married between 1980 and 1999. They shared two daughters: Annie, 44, and Hallie, 37.
“A complete original,” Hallie wrote via her Instagram Story on Saturday, December 28, sharing a photo of her father.
Shyer died on Friday, December 27.
“It’s with an indescribably heavy heart that we share the news of our beloved father, Charles Shyer’s passing,” his family told Deadline in a statement. “His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he’s left behind. We honor the extraordinary life he led and know there will never be another quite like him.”
Shyer and Meyers had collaborated on the Oscar-nominated Private Benjamin in 1980 and 1998’s The Parent Trap before each finding directorial success on their own. Shyer, for his part, notably helmed the likes of the Father of the Bride franchise, Baby Boom and Irreconcilable Differences.
Father of the Bride star Kimberly Williams-Paisley was among the stars to honor Shyer’s legacy.
“When I was 19, Charles Shyer jump-started my career, and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity he and Nancy Meyers gave me,” Williams-Paisley, 53, wrote via Instagram on Saturday. “They were my Hollywood family for a time, and I wouldn’t be who I am today without them. He will be missed. I’m sending so much love to the family. ❤️❤️❤️.”
Hallie replied, writing, “Thank you, Kim. This is beautiful 🤍.”
Annie, for her part, sent a trio of white heart emojis in the comments section.
In response, Williams-Paisley added, “Sending love to you all ❤️.”
Meyers’ Instagram tribute also garnered emotional reactions from Lindsay Lohan, Kelly Rutherford, Phoebe Robinson, director Paul Feig and more.
“So sorry to hear this. Sending you lots of love, Nancy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️,” Feig, 62, replied.
Lohan, 38, for her part, commented with a simple red heart emoji. She also “liked” the upload. Lohan got her big break in Meyers and Shyer’s Parent Trap remake, playing estranged twins Hallie and Annie. The characters were named after the pair’s two daughters.
