Heather Wants You to Believe In What Happened To Doris (Fantastic Fest)

Some hauntings get told so many times that the woman at the center disappears behind the special effects. The team I sat down with knew that going in. Their answer was to hand the story back to her. “I would like them to have empathy for Doris,” Heather Graham told me. “I want them to believe a woman’s story.”

Heather plays Doris, a real woman who died before production began. I watched the film the night before our conversation and loved it. I also walked in knowing almost nothing about the real case. What stuck with me afterward wasn’t the entity. It was how carefully everyone at that table talked about the mother it followed.

Going Back to the Real Story

The story has been mined by horror for decades. Nick admitted the fear of cliché was always there. The script went through many versions with writer Thomas Fenton, and at one point it carried “more of a movie ending, if you will.” They scrapped that and went back to the source.

“We got the life rights from her real son,” Nick said. Conversations with Brian shaped what came next. The goal became to “tell the story empathetically about this woman who went through these things” and make her “the hero that she ended up being.”

One of his collaborators summed up the shift neatly. “It is a family story with this horrific element that occurred.”

Filling In the Gaps

Heather never got to meet Doris. She built her from Brian’s stories, podcasts and a stack of family photos. Then she did the rest herself. “I just make up memories for my character,” she explained. “I make up all the memories based on the facts and then I just imagine the ones that I don’t know.”

Those photos followed Doris all the way into later life. “You just see her as a grandmother eventually,” Heather said. That image clearly mattered to her.

Judging Her by Today’s Rules

Doris lived in an era that did not look kindly on her choices. “She had kids with four different guys and she was unique for that time period,” Heather said. “Nowadays people having kids with different people, no one cares.”

So she refused to play Doris through that old lens. “I wanted to look at her in a nonjudgmental way that we can look at now today,” she said. What she wanted instead was compassion for “how she’s trying to keep her kids safe.”

A Believer in the Room

In the film the men show up doubting Doris. Dr. Ross does not. The actor playing her, whose name I couldn’t make out on the recording, pointed out that Ross runs a parapsychology department. “She comes into the situation prepared to believe,” she said.

For her, understanding the thing makes it worse. By the kitchen scene the haunting becomes “a scary but kind of defined thing with an understandable purpose.” Her verdict: “It kind of makes it more scary.”

Why It Still Matters

So why return to a story horror has picked clean? Nick didn’t hesitate. “It’s just because of the human story of a mom and her kids,” he said. “I think that will never go away.”

He also pushed back on the idea that everyone has already seen it. “You’re presuming that everybody has seen all those movies before,” he said. “There’s also always a new audience.”

The Woman Who Kept Fighting

Somewhere in the conversation someone pointed out that Doris fought this thing for 25 years and lived to become a grandmother. “So I do feel like in certain ways she succeeded.” Forty years of horror movies turned her into a spooky story. This team wants her back as a mother who never stopped protecting her kids. After all that time, she’s finally the one being believed.
