It’s no secret that Guillermo del Toro has iconic taste in movies. He’s a student of cinema and his creative output reflects his keen understanding of every aspect of the filmmaking process. One need look no further than the Oscar-winning creator’s Twitter (X) profile to see how deep his knowledge of and appreciation for the cinematic arts goes. The director frequently shares insight into his process and also offers recommendations there.

Guillermo del Toro loves this tragic picture:

On that note, we are back today with another Guillermo del Toro-approved movie recommendation. Naturally, the suggestion comes via Twitter. This time around, the filmmaker is singing the praises of Don’t Look Now. His tweet reads: “Film: Don’t Look Now by Nicolas Roeg. Contains the best of all of Roeg’s “parallel montage” sequences and his most chilling climax. Superb.”

If you find yourself eager to take the film in after that enticing endorsement from del Toro, we have the goods on how you can do just that. You can find Don’t Look Now streaming for free (with ads) on Pluto as of the publication of this post.

I too count myself a fan of the film. In fact, I previously covered it for my Dread Central column, The Overlooked Motel. Here is a link to my coverage in case you’d like to hear some of my thoughts.

Fun fact: Real-life couple Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner (who is now a person of interest in Wood’s death) were suggested for the lead roles when Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland weren’t expected to be available during the shoot. But plans changed and both were free in time for the start of principal photography. Roeg maintains that Sutherland and Christie are the only performers he ever considered.

The setup for Don’t Look Now goes like this:

Still grieving over the accidental death of their daughter, Christine, John (Sutherland) and Laura Baxter (Christie) head to Venice, Italy, where John’s been commissioned to restore a church. There Laura meets two sisters (Hilary Mason and Clelia Matania) who claim to be in touch with the spirit of the Baxters’ daughter. Laura takes them seriously, but John scoffs until he himself catches a glimpse of what looks like Christine running through the streets of Venice.

That’s all we have for you at present. Stay tuned to Dread Central for more recommendations from your favorite creators in the genre space as we uncover them. Also, be sure to follow us on Twitter (please don’t ever call it X) so you never miss out on an exciting update.
