Here is a rundown on everything we currently know about the forthcoming sequel to Corin Hardy’s 2018 box office smash.
In 2019, we reported that a sequel to The Nun was an inevitability and it was likely just a matter of time before the project went before cameras. And seeing as The Nun stands as the highest grossing installment in The Conjuring universe (raking in $365 million at the global box office), we’re not shocked that a follow up is heading into production (with the working title The Nun 2).
Given the lukewarm critical and audience reception of the first film, it will be interesting to see how The Nun 2 is received by moviegoers and critics. In spite of delivering rather impressive box office numbers, the 2018 original sits at a relatively low 25% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. tThe film’s audience score is only slightly higher at 35%.
The Nun (2018) unfolds in a monastery in 1950s-era Romania with Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and Father Burke (Demián Bichir) looking into the suicide of a nun. The Nun 2 will see the action relocated to France and will follow Sister Irene (who may or may not be played by Farmiga this time around) as she investigates the murder of a priest and then tangles (once again) with the demonic entity Valak.
The 2023 follow-up is expected to take place four years after its predecessor.
The upcoming sequel has been slated for a fall 2023 release date by Warner Brothers and New Line
The sequel is set to come to theaters on September 8, 2023. If that date remains unchanged, the film will go before audiences almost exactly five years to the day from its predecessor (which debuted on September 7, 2018). Accordingly, the flick will be in cinemas in time for the spooky season.
While the picture is still listed as being in pre-production, cameras are likely to roll very soon. The release date is just under a year out, so I suspect we will be hearing news regarding the commencement of production any day now.
A writer and director have already been announced
The Nun (2018) was helmed by Corin Hardy (The Hallow), with Gary Dauberman assuming screenwriting duties. However, neither Dauberman or Hardy are slated to return for the follow-up outing.
The sequel will see Michael Chaves (who previously worked with James Wan The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It) at the helm and Akela Cooper (who collaborated with Wan on Malignant) will be penning the screenplay.
Additionally, James Wan and Peter Safran will be on deck to co-produce the latest installment in the franchise Wan helped bring to life in 2013 with the box office smash, The Conjuring.
Expect Characters and talent from The Nun (2018) to return!
Bonnie Aarons has already been tapped to reprise the role of demonic nun, Valak. The character was first introduced via The Conjuring 2. And the rest, as they say, is history.
While there hasn’t been a proper announcement that I have been able to track down, Taissa Farmiga is speculated as being slated to recur as Sister Irene. Collider lists the actress as returning. But I’m still unable to pinpoint where that scoop came from. With that said, Farmiga has expressed interest in a return to the role and previously revealed that she has been approached about reprising the Sister Irene role for the sequel.
