While we still have just under half a year for horror movies in 2024, what was once a steady hold at the higher spots in the top 10 has dropped to its lower levels. Not even an M. Night Shyamalan movie could break into this week’s top five.

Of course the buddy film of the century, Deadpool & Wolverine still ranks at the number one spot taking in $54 million over the weekend and joining the billion-dollar club, it still fell 44% in attendance which shows it’s losing some staying power.

Conversely, women en masse aren’t as interested in the machismo antics of superhero hubris, they would much rather see a rom-dram and they got that in the form of It Ends With Us based on the novel by beach-reading companion Colleen Hoover. A staggering 84% of theatergoers who went to see the Blake Lively heartbreaker were of the fairer sex, taking the number two spot with $50 million in its first week.

Borderlands

Twisters held strong at number three dropping only 34% in its third week taking in $15 million, edging out Eli Roth’s troublesome Borderlands which debuted at number four with almost $9 million. Despicable Me 4 took in enough to make number 5, beating out everyone’s favorite hit-or-miss director M. Night Shyamalan’s latest passion project Trap.

Trap didn’t sit well with fans. Many complained about the length of the concert scenes and the improbability of the plot devices. That being said, it was Josh Hartnett’s performance that got raves, still, it wasn’t enough to keep this stinker from smelling. It took in $6.7 million and fell a whopping 56% percent to number six.

Inside Out 2 gathered $4.9 million at number seven while Harold and the Purple Crayon came in next at $3 million.

Cuckoo

This brings us to a surprising twist, the much anticipated Cuckoo was kicked out of the nest early, debuting at number nine with a $3 million. The film got great early word-of-mouth at this year’s SXSW but didn’t catch the worm when it came to its mass theatrical release.

And finally, the stool has finally been pulled from under Longlegs as it rounds out the bottom at number 10 with only $2 million in ticket sales, dropping 53%.

Everything is about to change for horror fans this upcoming weekend with Alien: Romulus cashing in on its marketing campaign hoping their aggressive PR hype was enough to get fans into seats on opening day.
