Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese is a master of cinema, not only in his own filmmaking output, but in his support of indie cinema across genres and decades. And he proved that in a recent interview with the Associated Press (AP). When asked about what films he’s liked recently, he named Jane Schoenbrun’s queer masterpiece I Saw The TV Glow.

More specifically, Scorsese told AP, “There was one film I liked a great deal I saw two weeks ago called I Saw the TV Glow. It really was emotionally and psychologically powerful and very moving. It builds on you, in a way. I didn’t know who made it. It’s this Jane Schoenbrun.”

“This Jane Schoenbrun” is a rising star and first made their mark on the genre world with their 2021 feature film We’re All Going To The World’s Fair. Their lo-fi analog horror film speaks to a life shaped by isolation and parasocial relationships. Now, with the support of A24, Schoenbrun created a gorgeous and heart-breaking world in their latest feature I Saw The TV Glow.

In the film Martin Scorsese recommends

Teenager Owen is just trying to make it through life in the suburbs when his classmate introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show—a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen’s view of reality begins to crack.

The film made a splash this year and even inspired an entire TikTok trend where trans users shared their own experiences with coming out, whether they did it later in life or if they’re still struggling to come out openly. It’s a film that spoke to people open and honestly about dysphoria, toxic friendships, and realizing it is truly never too late.

Schoenbrun reacted to Scorsese’s praise on Twitter, exclaiming that the news gave them a fever. Read their full reaction below:

And this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the fantastic world of I Saw The TV Glow. In a recent interview with USA Today, Schoenbrun discussed a potential sequel, saying:

“I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while. I always ask myself, ‘Where do the characters go? Is there anywhere else after this?’ Sometimes there’s not an answer that deserves further exploration, but I do think there is something about this particular movie that needs a yang to its yin. I don’t think it’s something people will be expecting, but it will be something that’s very much in the same world, from the other side of a looking glass.”

If you haven’t experienced the best and weirdest movie of 2024 yet, it’s streaming now on Max.

What did you think of Schoenbrun’s latest film? Where does it fall on your favorites of the year? Let us know on Twitter, Instagram, or Bluesky @DreadCentral.
