Nickelodeon Kart Racers has managed to keep the Mario Kart vibe alive with a very different world as well as a very different, but equally fun, character lineup. These characters are all the memorable toons that we have come to love on Nick over the years. The first two games were wildly popular. The big bonus was being able to play as all your fave Nick characters. ‘Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway’ is the latest in the franchise and it brought on the characters.
Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3 gives you a substantial forty characters to choose from on a total of thrity-six tracks. Your karts and motorcycles are also able to transform into a watercraft to get your character smoothly across aqua terrain.
Another awesome feature of this entry is the ability to fully customize your character’s karts. This includes paint jobs as well as personalized themes based on the character you choose.
You can also take on friends and enemies both on the couch for local play on a split-screen experience. Go online against up to 12 players. Arena mode allows you to go face-to-face against your enemies.
The latest entry features Ren, Stimpy, Oblina, CatDog, Zim, Gir, and a whole lot more. Each brings their own characteristics into the game. This includes specialized moves, and reactions as well as an amazing collection of real character voices. Yep. Almost all forty characters were brought to life with their actual voice actor coming in for some sessions.
I was provided a review code on Xbox Series X|S and the controls were very well executed and were exactly what they needed to be in a kart racing game. They were tight and responded well and assisted in performing everything that needed to be done including tricks, battle and pulling off the big W. The Mario Kart controls blueprint is obviously a touchstone here. It is clearly a situation in which it ain’t broken, so don’t fix it.
The colors and graphics look spectacular on Xbox Series X. The entire experience feels like an amalgamation of all of these amazing cartoons. The colors are fantastic. It is also awesome to see each of these cartoons brought to life via each character’s respective level. The selection of these levels is a lot of fun too. Some of these levels and their easter eggs bring back all kinds of memories from Ahh!!! Real Monsters, Invader Zim, CatDog and more. There is an attention to detail that was made to bring these all to the kart racer that works fantastically.
There are moments on a few of the tracks where there seemed to be a little bit too much open space. These areas are normally filled to the brim in kart racers. Mario Kart may have set the blueprint, but other kart racers go out of their way to set themselves apart by creating jaw-dropping sequences that are tied together with drifts, jumps, and the like. However, there are moments in Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3 that feel a bit too comfortable. It would have been great to have seen these areas filled with a little bit more fun, obstacles, and challenges. This kart racer is one of my personal favorite franchises. It would be brilliant to see the next entry trust itself enough to just go for it and get as weird and fun as possible. This is Nickelodeon after all.
Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway is a fun kart racer. As mentioned above, it is one my favorite kart racers out there. These fantastic controls paired together with all of these character selections and the number of tracks to choose from is a lot to bring to the table of gaming fun. It also nicely bridges the gap of a being a fun family night game and a fun Friday night game with friends and drinks. Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3 is high-octane fun that revs kart racing off the charts. This is the game that you want to bring over to your friend’s house. It’s a game that exudes party-fun sensibilities and has a ton of replayability. Plus, who doesn’t want to play as Oblina?!
Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway is currently available on PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
