Quentin Tarantino is a filmmaker of many words and hot takes. However, his opinions on films always surprise us, especially when they’re positive. This is why we did a doubletake when he called this ultimate forgotten John Carpenter 1970s science fiction comedy a masterpiece.
During a recent appearance on The Video Archives, Quentin Tarantino stressed that the “m-word” is one of the words he’s hesitant to use. However, he thinks this early John Carpenter film deserves the label.

“I want the m-word to mean something; I don’t want to throw it around. And I don’t want to use the m-word on the very first movie we talk about. I actually think it applies to Dark Star. It’s a science fiction masterpiece.”
Tarantino continued fangirling over the film, stating:
“They completely predate the jump to light speed in Star Wars. It’s obvious that George Lucas saw this and used the idea for lightspeed travel. It’s impossible that Lucas had not seen that, and we know he saw it.” – Quentin Tarantino, The Video Archives (via Out Magazine UK)

Dark Star was directed by John Carpenter. It was written by John Carpenter and Dan O’Bannon. It stars Dan O’Bannon, Dre Pahich, and Brian Narelle.
The movie came out in 1974 and is now streaming on Crackle, Plex, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Tubi, and Youtube for free.
