As we’re dragged feet first into the darkest weeks of winter, I can’t help but wallow in my mild —albeit diagnosed—depression. And how could you blame me? My hometown of Toronto has been flattened in an avalanche of snow as the pandemic rages on in the world beyond my buried cabin. So, as I curl up into a cold, sweaty, and defeated pile of human laundry, I turn to the Internet for sad-boy horror movie recommendations. And as per usual, Reddit has provided.

The good horror folk of the internet’s front page have taken a definitive vote on the most depressing spooky titles ever. I’ve gone ahead and assembled the top 10 films, in order of upvotes. So, if like me, you’re happily wallowing in the deep dark depths of Wintertime Sadness, take a dip into these dark recommendations.

I’ve got no choice but to agree that Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist is the perfect hybrid of uncanny and sad. The Lovecraftian hopelessness of this 2007 classic will leave any hardened soul in a puddle for days.
