Stay frosty, my friends.

Icicles: they’re terrifying. Those dangling daggers of ice stare at us as we talk past buildings and under awnings, daring us to get close. Icicles always seem to be out for blood just on their own. But, when wielded by the right person, they can be even more deadly. I mean, it is the perfect murder weapon. You stab someone with it then it melts. There’s no weapon left behind covered in fingerprints, after all.

In honor of nature’s knives, we’re looking at the top five icicle deaths in horror and how killers have used this icy weapon to their advantage. So stay inside away from the icicles and read about their murderous uses instead.

Black Christmas (2019)

Black Christmas icicle 1024x576 - Top 5 Nastiest Icicle Deaths In Horror

Sophia Takal’s interpretation of Black Christmas has a great cold open in more ways than one. The film’s first death occurs when one of the soroity sisters, Lindsey, is walking home alone at night. She’s understandably nervous as a man trails behind her, knowing all too well the dangers women face just existing. But he’s not the threat. Instead, a black-cloaked figure appears out of nowhere with murderous intent. And he isn’t wielding a knife. No, he snaps an icicle off of the roof where Lindsey is trying to find sanctuary. This horrific death also leads to one of the film’s most striking shots: the bloody snow angel.

Black Christmas (2006)

This sequel is divisive, but we can all agree Mrs. Mac’s icicle death is pretty incredible. It’s also, sadly, just an accident. But we know Billy would have probably gotten to her eventually. Before her untimely death, Mrs. Mac is trying to escape the soroity house where bodies are piling up. But, little does she know that the icicles hanging from their roof had other plans. Unfortunately she decides to look up just as an icy dagger breaks from its perch. It goes straight through her head, piercing from front to back as we see the bloody tip jut from her skull. And of course she’s wearing a Santa hat through the entire ordeal. Festive!

Jack Frost (1997)

Screen Shot 2021 12 16 at 2.28.36 PM 1024x614 - Top 5 Nastiest Icicle Deaths In Horror

Yes this is a film about a man who’s ressurrected as a killer snowman to get his revenge. And yes, he can shoot icicles out of his giant snow hands. In fact, he does just that Tommy Davrow. Poor Tommy tries to fight back, but normal weapons are no use against Jack Frost. The snowman impales Tommy to a wall with an icicle to the shoulder, then takes another shot, now aiming for Tommy’s head. We see it make contact with his forehead, then on the other side of the wall, dripping with blood.

Die Hard 2

Bakerkill - Top 5 Nastiest Icicle Deaths In Horror

Ok, fine, Die Hard 2 isn’t a horror movie, but we couldn’t resist including this gnarly icicle death. In the scene, John McClane (Bruce Willis) is trying to fight off an armed mercenary holding McClane down. On top of that, the guy is pointing a pretty large knife in McClane’s face. But, our hero has a plan as he spots the strategically placed icicles right next to where he lays in the snow. As he fights off his opponent, he snaps an icicle and promptly shoves it right in the guy’s eye. It’s eye trauma in the vein of horror master Lucio Fulci. And the camera doesn’t shy away from the gore. We get a few shots of the icicle jutting out of the eyesocket.

Iced (1988)

You may not have heard of this chilly slasher film, but you may want to check it out for its gnarly death sequences alone. The film follows a group of friends who head to the opening weekend of a ski resort. But, this isn’t going to be just a good time on the slopes. No, a deranged killer begins hunting them down one-by-one and kills them in various winter-themed ways. So, of course, he kills one of them with an icicle, the character Diane to be exact. He takes that nature-made weapon and shoves it right into her eye. It seems like icicles and eye trauma go hand in hand…
