Admittedly, the realm of online music platforms doesn’t always generate the most uplifting news — see technological innovations such as “speaker urns,” allowing AI covers/remixes, etc. But in a generally feel-good moment, music discovery siteLast.fm has announced its newfound status as a fully independent company.
In a post on their support forums, the Last.fm team revealed a brand-new ownership team, but didn’t specify who now owns the long-running music recommendation engine. The statement added that they’d “share more about what comes next in the weeks ahead.”
In the meantime, however, Last.fm users can pretty much expect the same reliable ol’ interface and general levels of engagement. The team said that “everything works exactly as it did yesterday,” including “account and scrobbles,” “data and privacy settings,” and “Pro subscription and billing.” And even with new leadership, the “people behind the product” will also remain the same.

So, how will this move ultimately affect users? Well, the Last.fm team said that the independent status means that they can “focus fully on building listening insights and community features for music fans,” adding that we’ll see “continued, steady improvements over time.” They also plan to “continue supporting the ecosystem around Last.fm,” which means tools using the API will not only continue to work, but even more new enhancements could be coming down the pipeline.
Now, once the ownership team is revealed and actually gets its feet wet, this change could still mean big things for the beloved platform. (Because, regardless of what a post says, these ownership swaps inevitably ruffle some feathers.) However, if we base our reactions on comments from both Reddit’s r/Music and r/popheads, folks who’ve been on the platform for years are genuinely excited. Many expressed the idea that as long as the system remains intact, so too will their memberships and usage. So, just keep on keepin’ with those scrobbles, Last.fm team!
Last.fm is unique for its “scrobble” feature, which tracks a user’s listening history across multiple platforms by hooking into services like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. It then uses this information tomake personalized recommendations.
After launching in March 2002, Last.fm was independent for its first five years. The company was acquired by CBS back in May 2007 for $280 million before being foldedinto Paramount Streaming in 2021 and then Paramount Skydance in 2025.
