MGM Acquires The Rights To Nikyatu Jusu’s ‘Night Of The

It’s a great day to be a horror fan! According to Deadline, MGM has acquired the worldwide rights to Nikyatu Jusu’s Night Of The Living Dead sequel. 

For those who need a refresher, the original Night Of The Living Dead came out in 1968. It was George A. Romero’s first feature, but it cemented him as a household name among horror fans. The original film followed a group of survivors who barricade themselves into a farmhouse to avoid a zombie apocalypse. The group was led by Ben (played by the late Duane Jones). This was groundbreaking because it was at a time when it was rarer to see a Black male lead in a horror film than it is today.

The original was the first of Romero’s six Dead movies. Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead followed the original entry. So, there is a lot of source material to play with. Or ignore, if this sequel wants to go in an entirely new direction. With the continued rise in the love for zombies and the increase of reimaginings, reboots, and remakes that we’ve been seeing the last few years, this is an especially exciting franchise to work with. 

There are currently no concrete plot details available about Jusu’s Night Of The Living Dead sequel. Jusu is mostly known for her unsettling short films which include Suicide by Sunlight. Jusu’s feature debut, Nanny, just hit Amazon Prime after completing a festival circuit that included this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Nanny was the first horror film to win Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize. Jusu also became the second Black female filmmaker to win the award.

The script is penned by LaToya Morgan, whose credits include The Walking Dead and Into The Badlands. As of right now, there isn’t even a logline for this script. However, Morgan clearly knows the genre, so we’re expecting a good and corpse-filled good time.
