More than two decades afterTetsuo: The Iron Manbecame one of the most influential cyberpunk body horror films ever made, director Shinya Tsukamoto returned to his twisted metallic universe withTetsuo: The Bullet Man. While it differs in style from its predecessors, the third installment remains an uncompromising blend of psychological horror, industrial nightmare, and relentless body transformation that only Tsukamoto could create.
The story follows Anthony (Eric Bossick), an American businessman living a quiet life in Tokyo with his wife and young son. His ordinary existence is shattered when tragedy strikes, awakening something buried deep within him. As grief and rage consume Anthony, his body begins a horrifying metamorphosis, fusing flesh with steel and transforming him into an unstoppable weapon bent on revenge.
Unlike the nearly nonstop assault ofTetsuo: The Iron Man, The Bullet Mantakes more time establishing its characters before unleashing its mechanical madness. That added emotional foundation gives Anthony’s transformation greater impact, making his descent into metallic chaos feel like an extension of overwhelming grief rather than simply a spectacle of grotesque imagery.
Visually, the film is unmistakably Tsukamoto. The director once again fills the screen with kinetic camerawork, rapid-fire editing, harsh industrial sound design, and surreal practical effects that blur the line between flesh and machine. The result is a sensory overload that feels simultaneously chaotic and meticulously crafted. Every transformation sequence is unsettling, showcasing the filmmaker’s unmistakable style while pushing the franchise into new territory.
Eric Bossick delivers a committed performance as Anthony, successfully conveying the confusion, anger, and desperation of a man losing control of both his emotions and his body. His journey is complemented by Tsukamoto’s direction, which never loses sight of the emotional core beneath the film’s barrage of metallic carnage.
WhileThe Bullet Manmay be more accessible than the original films thanks to its English-language dialogue and a slightly more conventional narrative structure, it never sacrifices the strange, experimental energy that made the series a cult phenomenon.
