An American Werewolf in London 750x422 - 'Post Mortem With Mick Garris': The 5 Most Popular Episodes Of 2021 [DREAD Podcast Network]

If you listen to horror podcasts, it’s a good bet you’re already aware of Post Mortem With Mick Garris. And, as of April 2021, the number one horror interview podcast on this planet is also a crown jewel of the DREAD Podcast Network! On the show, you’ll hear Mick Garris (the original Master of Horror) sit down with the most influential creative voices in cinema to pick their oozy, bloody, squishy brains.

So, as Dread Central‘s first calendar year with this podcast turns into our second, we’ve decided to collect the five most outrageously popular episodes as a tasting menu for the uninitiated. If you haven’t yet had a chance to check into Mick’s spooky hotel of horrors, the following episodes are the perfect place to start.

From Frank Darabont to Kevin Smith, you don’t want to miss these groundbreaking episodes hot from the DREAD Podcast Network.

5. CLANCY BROWN

Clancy Brown is a cinema hero, having appeared in countless classics like The Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers and Highlander. The actor has appeared in his share of cult classics too, like the recent Shudder release The Mortuary Collection and even showing up alongside Sting as Frankenstein’s monster in The Bride.

While speaking with Mick on a recent episode, Brown shared why The Bride still holds such brilliant cult status, so many years after its 1985 release. The actor also shared some fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about his distaste for wearing complicated prosthetics.

Check it out here:

4. NEIL BLOMKAMP

Neill Blomkamp is one of the most celebrated genre creators in recent memory. His Academy Award-nominated debut District 9 is still a startling example of science fiction perfection. The writer/director has also been wrapped up in highly publicized unproduced projects, such as a Halo adaptation and an Alien sequel.

While sitting down with Mick, the South African native pulled the curtain back on some of his stylistic signatures, such as his marriage of CG with handheld camera motion. Hearing Blomkamp unveil his creative inspiration and filmmaking style is a true must-listen.

Take a listen to the highly popular episode right here:

3. FRANK DARABONT & TYSON BLUE

When it comes to Hollywood heavyweights, you won’t find a harder hitter than Frank Darabont. This man is responsible for three stunning Stephen King adaptations, including The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile and The Mist. However, he is also the wizard behind the biggest horror television series ever produced: The Walking Dead.

On Darabont’s episode of Post Mortem, Mick gets the famous director to share some pretty fascinating and shocking career updates. While we quietly hope he may change his mind down the line, he shared that he was potentially finished with directing as a medium. He revealed that he’d rather be spending his time with his friends and family.

When Mick asked if he could be finished with the directing gig, Darabont says “To a degree, yeah. I can’t tell you how many times I burned out. I was a workaholic machine for thirty years.” He continued with “I just thought, I don’t want however much time I have left, I don’t want the next 20 years to go by. Nobody ever laid on their death bed and said, ‘Gee, I wish I had had some more deadlines.’

2. JOE DANTE AND JOHN LANDIS

The second most popular episode of the year is wholly unsurprising. Only Mick could supply a classic two-for-one like this. Joe Dante and John Landis both arrived to chat with the Master of Horror about their respective Hollywood careers.

The werewolf wizards also dig deep into their experiences directing two of the most important lycanthropic titles in the history of cinema: The Howling and American Werewolf in London. If you are megafans of either of these films, then you need to stop driving, pull over to the side of the road and turn this episode on immediately.

One of the highlights of the episode is when all of the filmmakers discuss their favorite werewolf films. What follows is an incredible list of international titles that I won’t spoil here, however, I will make one exception. On the topic of modern werewolf titles of special note, the first movie John Landis brings to the table is Ginger Snaps

1. KEVIN SMITH

The most-listened-to episode of Post Mortem this year was also the most personal. Kevin Smith is the original DIY filmmaker icon of modern memory. His cinematic contributions, including Clerks and Dogma, are destined to be remembered for generations to come.

Mick and Smith have unexpected conversations about their most important sleeper successes, their fathers, and, shockingly, their shared experiences surviving life-threatening medical conditions. In Mick’s own words: “we both nearly died from widowmaker heart attacks, the kind that has a 12% survival rate. So this one was unlike any other interview I’ve ever done.”

This is a truly extraordinary episode featuring two of the most memorable personalities in the industry sharing deeply personal stories. You don’t want to miss it:
