Quentin Tarantino is a filmmaker known for having an opinion. While he’s never been a stranger when it comes to sharing his thoughts on other filmmakers’ movies, sometimes he has something positive to say. And today, we were reminded of a slasher film this icon loves to death.

In an Entertainment Weekly (via Far Out Magazine UK) interview during Tarantino’s Grindhouse press tour, he said the original My Bloody Valentine might be his favorite slasher. An interesting choice, to be sure.

My Bloody Valentine - Quentin Tarantino's Favorite Slasher Film Is A Surprising Bloody Classic

My Bloody Valentine is a 1981 Canadian slasher that left a mark on several generations. It was directed by George Mihalka and written by John Beaird. Based on a story by Stephen A. Miller, it stars Paul Kelman, Lori Hallier, and Neil Affleck.

In the film, a decades-old folk tale surrounding a deranged murderer killing those who celebrate Valentine’s Day turns out to be true. When a group defies the killer’s order, people start turning up dead.

The interview also sees Tarantino say kind things about the slashers of previous eras:

“The genre I wanted to tackle was slasher films, because I’m a big fan of late-70s, early-80s slasher films […] The only thing was, what makes them so good is the genre is so rigid.” – Tarantino via Entertainment Weekly

So there we have it. Quentin Tarantino is on record (again), showing respect for a slasher that we might not have expected him to appreciate. Who had that on their bingo card for this year?
