It’s the best sports movie franchise in history —but the Rocky and Creed series have had their highs and lows. Here they are:
“,”title”:”Every Rocky and Creed Movie Ranked From Worst to Best”,”source”:{“blogId”:442,”domain”:”screencrush.com”,”name”:”ScreenCrush”,”callsign”:”ScreenCrush”,”market”:”National”},”items”:[{“alt”:””,”createdGmt”:”2023-02-20T14:45:55.462Z”,”id”:485314,”domainUrl”:”https://townsquare.media/site/442/files/2023/02/attachment-rocky-5-ranking.jpg”,”link”:””,”_id”:”63f387a321a4b0c8f3cc9a82″,”photo-url”:”https://townsquare.media/site/442/files/2023/02/attachment-rocky-5-ranking.jpg”,”photo-title”:”9. Rocky V (1990)”,”photo-description”:”
The key issue with Rocky V may be a core contradiction in its basic concept. It was clearly designed with a “back to basics” approach in mind; for the first time since the original film, John G. Avildsen returned as director, and for the first time in many years, Rocky was depicted as a working-class guy from Philly, rather than a wealthy, glamorous celebrity. (Supposedly a crooked accountant stole all of Rocky’s money, and a head injury forced him into early retirement.) The setting might be a bit more street-level, but the story is still fairly outlandish, especially when Rocky battles his new protégé, Tommy “The Machine” Gunn (Tommy Morrison), in a street fight. It’s not as bad as its reputation — and it could have been worse if Stallone had stuck with original ending, where Burgess Meredith returned as the ghost of Mickey, beckoning Rocky to keep fighting — but it’s undoubtedly the messiest entry in the franchise.
