The road to Star Trek: The Motion Picture was long and bumpy. Series creator Gene Roddenberry wrote several scripts for the film, then pivoted from a first Star Trek movie to a second Star Trek TV series which would have been called Star Trek: Phase II. After the first Star Wars became a massive hit in theaters, Paramount decided to pivot back to a Star Trek movie, and took the script for the Phase II pilot and turned it into the screenplay for The Motion Picture.

The ideas Roddenberry explored for a Star Trek movie before Phase II included one known as “The God Thing.”It would have seen the crew of the Enterprise largely scattered across the galaxy after the events of The Original Series and its “five-year mission.” Bones had become a veterinarian; Scotty was an alcoholic. Admiral Kirk then reunites his old team to combat a grave threat involving a being of immense power who emerges from another dimension and declares itself God.

Paramount rejected the script, although they later approved a similar concept as the subject of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Roddenberry also contemplated turning the unused script into an officially licensed Star Trek novel, but it was never actually published.
