The hook of Cloud Atlas (which, despite all of this, is a genuinely cool movie) is that every actor plays multiple characters across time, spinning a tale about reincarnated souls acting out the same joys and sorrows over and over. 2015 was pretty much the last year in which you could convince a studio to allow a diverse ensemble cast to play characters not of their own races (the ultimate “they couldn’t make it today”), and some of the wildest makeup work is saved for Tom Hanks, who portrays a hotel manager, an actor, and a primitive islander living on post-apocalyptic Hawaii — though pretty much every actor in it would have been appropriate for this list. (Korean Jim Sturgess is not real, he can’t hurt you.) Hanks’ gnarliest look is as “Dermot Hoggins,” a thuggish author with a bald head, goatee, and gold chain who throws the critic who panned his book off a balcony to his gruesome death.
