Could Outlander be going further back in time than ever seen before? It seems that way as a prequel series is reportedly in the works at Starz.
The time-traversing fantasy romance series finally returns for Season 6 on March 6 and already, the creatives are gearing up for their next project. According to Variety, Outlander‘s executive producer and showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is set to write and executive produce the prequel.
A writers’ room is also supposedly being assembled with hopes of getting to work within the next few weeks. Plot details for the project are currently under wraps, leaving fans to speculate about possible scenarios or storylines.

Along with Matthew B. Roberts, Outlander‘s Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis will executive produce the series under Tall Ship Productions. As fans of Starz‘s hit know by now, Outlander is based on the series of books by Diana Gabaldon who has also explored spinoff stories outside of the main one seen on the show.
In February, Gabaldon shared a Facebook post teasing a prequel novel that would focus on Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) parents, Ella MacKenzie and Brian Fraser. Gabaldon also published the prequel novella Virgins in 2013 focusing on young Jamie and Ian Murray (played by Steven Cree on the show) in 1740s France, it was part of the author’s Dangerous Women anthology.
It’s unclear at this time if either of those stories is being explored as the inspiration behind this mystery prequel series. In the past, there have been talks and hints about a potential Lord John Grey (David Berry) focused spinoff, but no further news about the spinoff has really been shared since early 2020.
Stay tuned to see if this mystery prequel series will officially be a go at Starz, and don’t miss Outlander‘s highly-anticipated return when Season 6 premieres this March.
