This is a tape of a 90 minute special produced by Dick Clark that originated from New York’s hottest disco club, Studio 54, and from the NBC Studios in Burbank, California. The show was telecast on August 19, 1978 at 11:30 p.m., pre-empting the normally scheduled Saturday Night Live show.
Note that at 9:10 into the video they visit the famous Studio 54 in New York. In retrospect, Studio 54 was probably the most famous and infamous disco club of the late 70’s disco era. This video inside the Club is an excellent opportunity to see what made Disco the phenomenon it was.
Studio 4 at the NBC Burbank Studios was converted into a discotheque where 80 Los Angeles area couples competed to determine the best disco dancing couple.
Among the guests on the show were The Village People, The Spinners, magician Lee Edwards, and trapeze performer Jann Ricca.

In 1978 I was the Manager of 3M Graphics Systems Television Network and the ½” VHS video tape format was new in the United States. While developing 3M magnetic tape for this new format we would evaluate different formulation lots by recording off-air programs. I recently found a box of these test tapes that are now over 40 years old. I’ve uploaded them for your enjoyment . . . and please excuse the occasional tape wrinkles, drop-outs, mis-tracking and jump cuts.
