At ScreenCrush, obviously that’s what pings our nostalgia radar the most. The 1980s were perhaps the last great era of big-time Hollywood filmmaking, when the studios still tookrepeated risks on subjects and directors, and made movies of scale with ideas and themes and didn’t spend every minute of every day thinking about how they could squeeze each and every last drop of juice from the IP under their control. You look at the best films of that decade and you see all sorts of things that became franchises later, butvery few sequels or prequels or reboots. You just see great moviemaking.

I can prove it. Here’s my list of the 15 best ’80s movies, ranked in order of personal preference. My picks really run the genre gamut; there’s horror, there’s sci-fi, there’s drama, there’s comedy, there’s war, there’s samurai epics, there’s action. And trust me: They’ve all aged better than leg warmers and Cabbage Patch Dolls and the Billy Joel song about starting fires. (No beef with Rubik’s cubes, those thingsremain a great way to distract a cranky child for 20 minutes.)

Full Metal Jacket (1987)”,”photo-description”:”
Seen as a disappointment by some in 1987 because of the magnitude of Kubrick’s stature as a filmmaker, the seven year wait between it andThe Shining, and the recent success of Oliver Stone’sPlatoon,Full Metal Jacketnow stands as one of Kubrick’s greatest achievements; a searing depiction of the madness of war both home and abroad. This one movie contains several of the most unforgettable film performances of the 20th century, including Vincent D’Onofrio as Pyle and Lee Ermey in his breakthrough role as the ruthless drill sergeant Hartman.

Hal Ashby’s sociopolitical satire Being There ends twice: First, with its beautiful, surreal final scene of Peter Sellers’ “Chauncey Gardiner” stepping through a garden, straightening a fallen tree and walking on water without sinking; second, with its credits, during which plays footage of Sellers repeatedly cracking up while reading a particularly complicated line while the crew and director laugh off camera. The scene is very funny, Sellers being an experienced comic actor yet obviously flustered at his inability to nail it, but the star himself reportedly strongly disliked the inclusion of the bloopers, believing they ruined the tone of the movie’s ending. For the fans, it’s as deep a look as you could get into an actor like Sellers’ process as he slips in and out of character.
