As a result, making a list of the best horror movies of the 1980s is really hard — there aremanyworthy options to choose from. Howdo you name just ten films to represent the hundreds of horrors that filled theaters and Blockbusters during the decade?

The titles that follow represent ScreenCrush’s attempt to give a shape and an overview to that tumultuous and terrifying decade with just one great horror film per year, from 1980 to 1989. Our picks show how expansive the horror genre got during the ’80s; there are iconic slasher movies, psychological thrillers, bloody gorefests, nightmarish works of surrealism, some zombies, a couple of werewolves, and even a dude with a chainsaw for a hand.

All through the 1980s, gore fans were treated to one great horror film after another. Here is the best from each year of the decade.

When Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation ofThe Shining first opened in theaters,Shiningauthor Stephen King openly bashed it. (King didn’t like the movie’s casting and hated Kubrick’s changes to his source material.) Critics mostly turned up their noses too! Even more astonishingly,The Shiningreceived multiple Razzie nominations, including one for Worst Director. Imagine nominating Stanley Kubrick for an award for the worst director in the world. Today, most audiences have come around to Kubrick’s fascinating, disturbing, claustrophobic horror film —except maybe Stephen King.

Original Movie:First Blood (1982)
Original Genre:Action drama
Sequel:Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
Sequel Genre:War
The first Rambo movie, First Blood, is an action-packed character study of a Vietnam veteran (Sylvester Stallone’s John Rambo) with all sorts of emotional problems; the film ends with him not in triumph but in custody, after he surrenders to police following an impassioned monologue about the horrors of war and the abuse he has suffered since returning to America. The second Rambo movie, Rambo: First Blood Part II (a title that is not confusing at all), is essentially a superhero film with Rambo seemingly cured of his mental issues and sprung from prison so he can return to Vietnam and rescue American POWs while not wearing a shirt. First Blood was a hit; Rambo was a sensation, grossing $300 million worldwide, spawning numerous additional sequels and countless imitators.
