The Vampire Lestat Blu-ray Review: The Season Is Magnificent, but the Special Features Steal the Show

master mentalism tricks

Lestat de Lioncourt has always wanted an audience. In Anne Rice’s books he wanted one badly enough to become a rock star, which is either the most vampire thing a vampire has ever done or the least. AMC’s The Vampire Lestat, the third season of Interview with the Vampire, finally gives him the stage, the amps and the crowd. Acorn Media International’s new Blu-ray gives him something he might like even better. A shelf. A case with his face on it. Proof that he was here.

When I reviewed the first two seasons on Blu-ray in July, I argued the show was worth owning because it was built to be looked at closely. That argument still holds. This set goes further, though, and the reason is the music. Acorn hasn’t just packaged a season of television. It has packaged a season plus something that very nearly works as its own release.

Lestat Takes the Microphone

The Vampire Lestat Blu-ray Review: The Season Is Magnificent, but the Special Features Steal the Show

For two seasons, Lestat lived inside someone else’s story. Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) told it, Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian) picked it apart, and Lestat came out the other side as a gorgeous, terrible rumor. Creator and showrunner Rolin Jones hands him the narration this time, and Sam Reid grabs it like a man who has been waiting in the wings for a century.

Reid’s Lestat is theatrical, vain and wounded in ways he would rather die a second time than admit. He’s seductive enough that you understand every bad decision made around him, and monstrous enough that you shouldn’t. Then the swagger slips, and there’s a startling amount of vulnerability underneath. The vanity is a costume. Sometimes he forgets to button it.

Turning Lestat’s fury and history into glam rock spectacle sounds ridiculous on paper. It’s also exactly right. This adaptation spent two seasons earning trust with bold reworkings of Rice and a refusal to sand down the queerness her readers always saw. A series with that track record has earned the right to put a vampire in eyeliner, hand him a microphone and let his grievances become a setlist.

Who Gets to Tell the Story

The season is about authorship as much as appetite. Louis told his version, now Lestat tells his, and the show knows better than to trust either of them completely. Fame becomes another kind of immortality and another kind of trap. A rock star, like a vampire, survives on an audience that wants something from him, and the season keeps those two hungers pressed uncomfortably close together.

Music is where the confession happens. Lestat can lie fluently in conversation. In a song, he has to commit to the feeling for three minutes in front of everyone. The songs work as testimony, a way for a man who controls every room to say things he’d never say plainly across a table.

Television Worth Owning

Lestat still

The picture is the first reason to buy this set, and the disc backs up the claim. This is a show that lives in low light, saturated stage color and costumes built from layers of fabric and ornament, which is exactly where a presentation proves itself.

I’m not going to hand you a technical breakdown. My case is simpler. This is a series designed to be studied frame by frame, and treating it as disposable streaming content, something to scroll past on a service that might quietly drop it, wastes the work of everyone who built those rooms and sewed those coats. Three discs, roughly 420 minutes. It’s a lot of Lestat. Lestat would tell you it isn’t nearly enough.

Here’s where the set separates itself from the pack. Acorn’s press release lists more than five hours of supplementary material, generous on its own. What matters more is what that material actually is.

Some of it is the expected prestige season package: a series preview, The Vampire Lestat After Dark, Episode Insiders and the Comic-Con 2025 panel. Fans who like their context will be well fed.

Then comes the music. A karaoke video for “Long Face.” A lyric video for “All Fall Down.” Two featurettes, Breaking Down: The Loneliness and Laying Down the Tracks, whose titles point straight at the songs. Highlights from The Vampire Lestat: One Night Only Live.

Put those together and you have something that could practically be sold separately as a visual soundtrack, and I mean that as the highest compliment I can pay a bonus menu. These features don’t treat the songs as a gimmick the season used up and discarded. They treat Lestat as an actual rock star with an actual catalog, one you can sing along to, read along with and watch performed live. The fictional band stops being a plot device and starts behaving like a band.

That’s why these extras feel like an extension of the creative world instead of leftover promotional material. Most behind the scenes features explain how the trick was done. These keep the trick going. A karaoke video for a vampire’s song is funny, and I’m delighted it exists. It’s also an invitation to stand in your living room and join Lestat’s audience, the one thing he has wanted since the 18th century.

Which Set to Buy

The standalone Season 3 Blu-ray (catalogue number AB2117) arrived in the UK on November 2, 2026, at a suggested retail price of £44.99. If you already own the first two seasons, this is your purchase.

Newcomers, or anyone who only streamed the earlier seasons, should look at Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire Collection (AB2118), arriving in the UK on November 23, 2026. It gathers Seasons 1 and 2 with The Vampire Lestat across eight discs and roughly 1,320 minutes, with special features advertised across all three seasons, at a suggested £94.99.

The Verdict

Some television Blu-rays preserve a season you love. They keep it safe from licensing deals and vanishing libraries, and that alone is worth something. The rarer kind makes the fictional world feel more complete than the episodes could on their own. The Vampire Lestat is the rarer kind. The season is magnificent, Reid’s Lestat belongs among the great screen vampires, and the picture rewards every candle and sequin. But it’s the music supplements that convince me Lestat’s band exists somewhere past the final episode, with a catalog, a live show and a crowd that knows the words. That’s what I want from physical media, and it’s why this set is an essential addition to any horror collection. Give the man his encore. Put him on your shelf, where no algorithm can take him off the bill.
