I realized that we don’t talk about Neon Rated films enough. The company has a consistent track record of films that keep horror fans talking. They always have a weird little treat around the corner that makes us love them even more. Think about all the Neon films we’ve gotten this year and how many more we are still looking forward to. With Longlegs and Cuckoo hitting theaters later this summer, it felt like it was time to dedicate a whole streaming guide to Neon’s unsettling shenanigans. I present to the Midnight Society, eight of the best Neon genre films streaming now!
In the Earth (2021)
Where You Can Watch It: Hulu
A scientist and a park ranger find themselves in trouble when a routine trip into the forest becomes a terrifying adventure. Many people checked this out because they are fans of filmmaker Ben Wheatley (Kill List, High-Rise, and Meg 2: The Trench). However, I was excited to see Hayley Squires (In Fabric, True Things, and Hoard) back in our genre. She’s a powerhouse, and I hope people start giving her so much more to do in horror movies.
Memories Of Murder (2003)
Where You Can Watch It: Tubi
This film, inspired by a true story, follows three detectives as they attempt to catch a sadistic serial rapist and murderer. One of the reasons I love Neon is because they bring us so many iconic South Korean thrillers. While this movie often gets overshadowed by other titles on Bong Joon Ho’s impressive filmography, it’s still easily one of the best movies to come out of his collaborations with Neon. Which probably explains why it holds a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Oldboy (2003)
Where You Can Watch It: Netflix
A drunk who was kidnapped and held captive for 15 years is set free and immediately seeks revenge against his mysterious captor. This Park Chan-wook masterpiece is easily one of the most beloved films in Neon’s library. This shocking and violent cinematic treat is a must-watch. I also love that it’s still inspiring some of our new favorite movies today, like Monkey Man. This movie is so iconic in so many ways and has forever changed the way I look at hammers.
Crimes Of The Future (2022)
Where You Can Watch It: Hulu
Humans are mutating to adapt to a synthetic environment, and a popular performance artist puts his own transformations on display for audiences. As usual, David Cronenberg gave us something gross, cool, and polarizing. This Viggo Mortensen-led tale is still causing conversation, and it managed to win over enough critics to be Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. If you haven’t checked it out, now might be your time. It’s an uncomfortable reminder that Cronenberg picked up monikers like The Baron of Blood and King of Venereal Horror for good reasons.
Parasite (2019)
Where You Can Watch It: Max
A destitute family creatively scams their way into a rich family’s world. This darkly comedic thriller only gets more relevant with time. The wealthy and poor collide in hilarious and devastating ways in this Oscar-winning Bong Joon Ho film. Again, part of why I’m such a huge fan of Neon is all the incredible Korean genre films in their library. Who else is giving us cinematic experiences of this magnitude? This is also a movie to check out if you want to spend more time with the work of the late Lee Sun-kyun.
Pig (2021)
Where You Can Watch It: Hulu
A truffle hunter must reawaken his past when his beloved pig is kidnapped. Before making us fall in love with a woman and her cat in A Quiet Place: Day One, Michael Sarnoski broke our hearts with the tale of a man and his pig. This movie was also a warning shot alerting us that his thrillers are wearing their hearts on their sleeves and will leave us all in shambles. Come for the duo of Nicolas Cage and Alex Wolff, but stay for the emotional rollercoaster served alongside food porn.
Possessor (2020)
Where You Can Watch It: Tubi
A corporate assassin uses brain implants to control other people and execute her targets. However, things take a turn when she finds herself trapped inside her latest assignment. This Brandon Cronenberg movie lives on the corner of sci-fi and psychological horror. This cast includes Andrea Riseborough (Nocturnal Animals), Christopher Abbott (It Comes at Night), and Tuppence Middleton (Lord of Misrule). You can also catch Cronenberg’s other Neon film, Infinity Pool, on Hulu this month.
Titane (2021)
Where You Can Watch It: Hulu
A murderous woman with a titanium plate in her head finds herself on an indescribable journey. Julia Ducournau gave us one of the most intriguing movies of 2021, Neon’s lineup, and possibly this decade. This film is a vibe, and it is the epitome of marching to your own drummer. One of my favorite things to do is make my friends watch this movie so they can take the same face journey I went on the first three times I saw it. I highly recommend this one to all of my fellow weirdos.
Enys Men, She Dies Tomorrow, and Revenge are also streaming on the usual suspects this month. If you’ve already seen these Neon gems, you could head to VOD to check out The Lodge, Gemini, and Immaculate.
