Perhaps we’ll get a new Final Girl with the ‘Alien’ series.
During the TCA winter panel, FX Chief John Landgraf shared some exciting updates about the upcoming and highly anticipated Alien TV series. According to Deadline, Landgraf said there are plenty of surprises in store. But, there will be no Ripley, which does break our hearts just a little.
Landgraf said:
“Alien takes place before Ripley. It’s the first story that takes place in the Alien franchise on Earth. So, it takes place on our planet. Right near the end of this century we’re in — so 70-odd years from now.”
The alien, also known as a Xenomorph, was supposedly discovered in Ridley Scott’s 1979 film. So it seems director Noah Hawley is posing that the monster wasn’t so mysterious after all. Ridley Scott is supposedly signed on as a producer, so perhaps he’ll help smooth out the continuity.
During the panel, Landgraf also said that “Ripley won’t be a part of it or any of the other characters of Alien other than the alien itself.” While Sigourney Weaver is iconic as sci-fi horror final girl Ripley in the original Alien quadrilogy, it’s exciting to see a new cast of characters. Perhaps we’ll have a new Ripley.
Of Hawley, Landgraf said:
“Noah has this incredible ability, and I think you’ve seen it with Fargo, to both find a way of being faithful, showing fidelity to an original creation like a Coen brothers’ movie, or in this case, Ridley Scott’s and James Cameron’s follow-up, Aliens, but also to bring something new to the table that represents extension and reinvention of a franchise at the same time.”
Alien is set to go into production this winter.
