In her directorial debut Umma, Iris K. Shim tackles a horror staple through a virtually untold lens. She tells the well-tread story of a mother learning to tackle intergenerational trauma but with Korean-American women at the center of her tale. With such a lens, Shim is able to offer a refreshing take through the eyes of people who are often left out of the genre.
Umma stars Sandra Oh and Fivel Stewart as a mother and daughter, respectively, who live alone on an isolated farm. But when Oh’s Amanda learns that her mother has died, old ghosts begin to haunt them. We sat down with Stewart to talk about her favorite horror movies, working with Oh, and why this movie forever changed her life.
