What happens when The Office fuses with Parks and Recreation, but hones in on an underfunded elementary school in Philadelphia? You get Abbott Elementary, ABC’s hilarious “mockumentary” style sitcom that’s amassed a record-breaking fanbase in its few months on the air.
The show’s creator, Quinta Brunson, previously starred in A Black Lady Sketch Show after going viral for this 15-second episode from her Instagram series, The Girl Who’s Never Been on a Nice Date. Now, Brunson is pulling what Issa Rae did with Insecure by serving as both the creator and star of Abbott Elementary. In doing so, Brunson proves once again just how much magic can be created by Black women taking the reins of storytelling.
The first 9 episodes of Abbott Elementary season 1 are available to watch right now on ABC or Hulu. After a mid-season break, the show returned on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2022. Want to get in on the fun? Here’s a brief overview of when you can watch each new episode.

In an interview with MSN, Brunson shares that her mother was a kindergarten teacher. In fact, she went to school in the same building as her mom for six years. Brunson’s mother shared numerous school anecdotes that stuck in Brunson’s brain throughout the years, and many of these were incorporated into the script of Abbott Elementary.
