The highly beloved franchise Insidious is getting a fifth installment an incredible five years after its last sequel Insidious: The Last Key. It’s been revealed that the movie is scheduled for a July 7, 2023, theatrical release.
Patrick Wilson is taking over the director’s chair for the first time in Insidious 5. Previously the splat pack of horror: James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Adam Robitel helmed the franchise.
Wilson will also star in this fifth chapter alongside Ty Simpkins who plays his son Dalton. In the first movie, Dalton is terrorized by a demon who orchestrates possessions from The Further, a kind of traumatic limbo.
“It’s something that I’m super passionate about and there hasn’t been a day since they pitched me the idea that I haven’t been all in.” Wilson told Screen Rant back in February. “It’s been a lot of work by Scott Teems, the writer and me. Leigh Whannell has helped out obviously a ton, and of course Blumhouse is a great partner. I’ve done a bunch of stuff with them, so I couldn’t be happier to have my first experience with a very helpful and comfortable group of people that, for some reason, trust me. So. We’ll see.”
Who wrote the script?
Whannel and Scott Teems write the script based on characters from Wan and his co-writers. Teems has written many high-powered scripts including Halloween Kills, The Exorcist (2023), and this year’s Firestarter.
Paranormal Activity director and genre enthusiast Oren Peli is producing Insidious 5. It was just announced that Peli will also produce the ninth installment of Paranormal Activity called Paranormal Activity: The Final Haunt.
Is July the best month to release it?
A July release is a bold move. In fact, we can probably expect that release date to change as it approaches. It’s sandwiched between two heavy hitters next summer: Indiana Jones 5 (June 29) and Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part I (July 14).
However, that’s not to say it will change. Horror movies have a way of getting butts in seats, especially if it’s a successful franchise like Insidious.
Plot details are sparse at this time. For instance, we don’t know if the Godmother of Gore, Lin Shaye, is coming back. Our bet is that she will at least make a cameo.
