Interview with Jane Hinchey, Author of Fur the Hex of

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Fur the Hex of It?

I really enjoy a good FBI or CIA tv show, and my mind being what it is, I thought, wouldn’t it be neat to write something like this, only make it supernatural? Hence the SIA (Supernatural Investigation Agency) and our intrepid witch, Holly. I love the idea of a paranormal law enforcement agency running alongside us mere mortals.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Fur the Hex of It, what would they be?

The theme song for Holly Day would be Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

My favorite genre to read is romantic urban fantasy, paranormal women’s fiction, and cozy mysteries.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

I have a TBR bookshelf! Sadly I have very little time to read as I’m always busy writing, BUT I drop everything to read any new release from Darynda Jones. I’m also getting into Denise Grover Swank’s books at the moment.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

Ha! This is like asking a mom who their favorite child is (lol). There are so many in this book, but I think the opening scene where Holly arrives in Gravestone is up there as one of my favorites. She’s hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable and realizes the bus driver has dropped her miles from where she needs to be. Then the Sheriff turns up, and she has to swallow her pride and accept a lift, but she’s as bristly as a brillo pad. The final straw is when he drops her at her accommodation – a derelict house. But she handles it all in her stride and is such a champ. I don’t think I would have dealt with the whole situation so calmly!

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I do! Part of my process is to light a candle – that tells my brain it’s writing time, and then I listen to thunderstorm sounds with my noise-canceling headphones on. Those headphones are great, as my husband is retired and always home. I don’t work well with outside noise/distractions, so the headphones are an absolute must.

They may work a little too well because I seriously don’t hear a thing. The doorbell. My husband approaching. When he suddenly taps me on the shoulder, it can frighten the life out of me!

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

All my stories’ goals are to give the reader a break from reality and take them away from their troubles, if only for a little while. That is my job, and that’s what I hope they get from my books.
