There’s An Unmissable New Netflix Thriller Tackling Social Inequality

A brand new international thriller has cracked the Netflix charts this week. However, this suspenseful, gritty little film isn’t just aiming to stress you out. The Village also has plenty to say about Japanese society and environmental issues.

“In a once-scenic village now dominated by a vast trash disposal site, a young man yearns to break free from a cruel fate tying him to the very grounds.

Set in the small Japanese hamlet of Kamon Village, this story depicts the reality of its inhabitants who are unable to live with their hands completely clean. This film brims with the ills facing modern Japanese society, including environmental issues, the poverty of young people in depopulated villages, expanding societal inequalities, and a warped social structure that makes it impossible to recover after going astray even once. Starring Ryusei Yokohama, this unprecedented human drama fuses entertainment with real issues plaguing Japanese society.“

The Village is written and directed by Michihito Fujii. The film stars Arata Furuta, Wataru Ichinose, Hana Kino, and Naomi Nishida.

We love international genre entries that disturb us while making us think about the world around us. After all, the best art is entertaining and educational.
