A Maligned Stephen King Adaptation Is Leaving Streaming Soon

Stephen King

With so many adaptations of Stephen King’s work, there are bound to be some that don’t resonate with the bestselling author. King has been vocally critical of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining on a number of occasions. While King is an outlier on that one, he’s far from alone in his distaste for some of the other screen renditions of his literary oeuvre. One excellent example of exactly that is Graveyard Shift.

When Deadline asked King to speak to his least favorite adaptations, he replied, “Should I even say that? I guess there are a number of pictures that I feel like, a little bit like, yuck. There’s one, Graveyard Shift, that was made in the eighties. Just kind of a quick exploitation picture.”

Although the film is far from celebrated and King is a vocal critic, the picture is probably worth watching at least once. If you’re curious to check it out, you can find Graveyard Shift streaming on Hoopla through August 30th and via Pluto through the 31st.

The film held the #1 slot at the box office during its opening weekend. However, negative critical and audience reception put a quick stop to that. The picture’s success tapered off by the second week of release. In total, the film pulled in $11,582,891 domestically.

Ralph S. Singleton helmed the picture. Graveyard Shift remains his only feature film directorial credit. John Esposito penned the screenplay.

David Andrews, Kelly Wolf, Stephen Macht, Andrew Divoff, Vic Polizos, and Brad Dourif topline the 1990 effort.

If you’d like to scope the trailer before committing to sit through the entire ordeal, you can view it in the player below.

Graveyard Shift plays out like this: John Hall (David Andrews) is a drifter who wanders into a small town in Maine. He needs a job and decides to seek employment at the community’s top business: a large textile mill. He is hired to work the “graveyard shift” — from around midnight to dawn — and, along with a few others, he is charged with cleaning out the basement. This task strikes the workers as simple enough, but then, as they proceed deeper underground, they encounter an unspeakable monstrosity intent on devouring them all.

That’s all we have for you at present. Stay tuned to the site in the near future for more exciting updates on which films are leaving streaming soon. Also, be sure to follow us on Twitter (X) so you never miss one of our updates.
