Quote Of The Day By Leonard Nimoy: A Life Is Like A Garden. Perfect Moments Can Be Had, But Not… – TVLine

Leonard Nimoy is synonymous with Spock from the “Star Trek” franchise, as he invested the beloved character with a sense of quiet dignity. Nimoy played Spock in the original “Star Trek,” having turned down a coveted role on a popular soap opera to star in the sci-fi series. Then on, the actor reprised the role in “Star Trek: The Animated Series,” the first six “Star Trek” films, and “Star Trek Into Darkness,” among other projects. Before landing this enduring role, Nimoy acted opposite Vincent Price in the daily anthology series “Matinee Theater.”

Nimoy’s notable television roles include “Mission: Impossible,” “Columbo,” “In Search of…,” “Gunsmoke,” and “The Twilight Zone.” Nimoy gotthree Emmy nominations for playing Spock and a fourth for playing Morris Meyerson in “A Woman Called Golda” in the outstanding supporting actor in a limited series or a special category.

Nimoy played Spock Prime in the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot by J.J. Abrams, with Zachary Quinto portraying a younger version of the character. Nimoy’s final appearance as Spock was in the 2013 sequel, “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

Beyond “Star Trek” on film, Nimoy also starred in “Deathwatch,” “Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” “The Transformers: The Movie,” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” Nimoy also voiced Master Xehanort in both “Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep” and “Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.”

Nimoy will always be remembered for his versatility as an artist and the depth he brought to Spock, which is why he is today’s Quote of the Day.

“A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP (Live Long And Prosper).”

The above quote is from Nimoy’s final post on Twitter (currently known as X). The “LLAP” at the end is a reference to Spock’s iconic refrain, “Live Long and Prosper,” which Nimoy added at the end of every tweet up until his death on February 27, 2015.

Nimoy’s quote is a beautiful musing on the impermanence of life, where “perfect moments” cannot be held on to forever. These moments, however, can be etched in our memories, which is one way to honor people and their legacies.

While Nimoy didn’t add further context to his quote, it can be understood as a metaphor. Beautiful moments bloom like flowers, and while they promise intense beauty, they cannot last forever… except in our memories.

People and their legacies live on, and the same can be said about Nimoy, whose contributions to the arts will forever be remembered. That said, his legacy extends beyond traditional creative spaces.

“Leonard Nimoy was an inspiration to multiple generations of engineers, scientists, astronauts and other space explorers, NASA administrator Charles Bolden told CBC News after the actor’s death. “As Mr. Spock, he made science and technology important to the story, while never failing to show, by example, that it is the people around us who matter most,” Bolden added.

• “When I saw the split-fingered gesture of these [rabbis in his family’s Boston temple]… I was entranced. I learned to do it simply because it seemed so magical. It was probably 25 years later that I introduced that gesture as a Vulcan greeting in ‘Star Trek’ and it has resonated with fans around the world ever since. It gives me great pleasure since it is, after all, a blessing.” — via Star Trek’s official website
• “[On the “Star Trek” reboot] I think that Spock and I have really merged. I’m totally comfortable with where I am and so is Spock. Zachary [Quinto] is playing a character that still has to find himself, and he comes to a point at the end of this movie, which I think is just wonderful, where he takes the final step to becoming the Spock I played in the original series.” — from an interview with Direct Conversations
• “[On retirement] Look, I liken myself to a steamship that’s been going full-blast. Then the captain pulls that handle back and says, ‘Full stop,’ but the ship doesn’t stop. It keeps moving from inertia. It keeps moving. It keeps moving. It’ll start slowing down, but it doesn’t stop. It doesn’t come to a dead stop. That’s the way I am. I still have a few odds and ends things that I enjoy doing. I don’t want to get up in the morning and have nothing to do that day. That would be boring.” — via Star Trek’s official website
