Street Fighter & Beneath the Storm Release Dates Delayed by Sony

Amid recent scheduling adjustments, Sony has announced updates to its upcoming film slate. Legendary’s Street Fighter adaptation and Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller Beneath the Storm are among the titles affected. As the studio reshapes its release calendar, projects are being retitled, rescheduled, or removed to align with broader distribution strategies and slate positioning.

Sony removes Legendary’s Street Fighter from 2026 release calendar

Originally assigned a release date of March 20, 2026, Sony has removed Legendary’s live-action adaptation of Street Fighter from its release calendar.

Legendary and Capcom, the Japanese video game developer that launched the Street Fighter franchise in 1987, are co-developing and co-producing the project. In February 2025, Sony named Emmy nominee Kitao Sakurai as the film’s director.

Sony has not announced any details regarding the cast, plot, or screenwriter. Legendary secured the television and film rights to the Street Fighter franchise in 2023. The studio has not confirmed the project’s current status following its removal from the release schedule.

Universal produced a live-action Street Fighter film in 1994, led by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen, and Raul Julia. In 2009, 20th Century Fox released Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring Kristin Kreuk.

Beneath the Storm gets new title and moves to July 2026

Sony retitled Tommy Wirkola’s shark thriller Beneath the Storm to Shiver and moved its release date from August 1, 2025, to July 3, 2026. The studio scheduled the new date to position the film within its summer blockbuster lineup.

Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou have been cast in the film. Although Sony has not released plot details, the story involves sharks. Wirkola wrote and directed Shiver, while Adam McKay and Kevin Messick produced it.

Wirkola directed Violent Night (2022), Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013), What Happened to Monday (2017), and Spermageddon (2024). Sony Pictures will distribute Shiver in theaters.
