Eric Dane offered insight into the progression of his ALS diagnosis before his death at age 53.
Dane revealed his health battle in April 2025. ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a nervous system disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and has no cure.
“I didn’t really think anything of it at the time; I thought maybe I’d been texting too much and my hand was fatigued,” he recalled several months later on Good Morning America. “A few weeks later, I noticed it’d gotten a little worse. I went and saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist, and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist and said, ‘This is way above my pay grade.’”
It took nine months for Dane to be officially diagnosed. Dane revealed on GMA that he lost function of his right arm, adding, “I feel like maybe a couple, few more months, and I won’t have my left hand [functioning] either.”
Dane, who shared two daughters with Rebecca Gayheart, remained focused on spending time with his loved ones. He used his platform to raise awareness about ALS while continuing to book acting roles.
“I’m not about to concede my purpose to some disease. I just am not capable of doing that,” he explained during a panel in December 2025. “I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, on any given day. I don’t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying. And I was a little bit pleasantly surprised when I realized that I wasn’t built like that, because I thought for sure that was gonna be me.”
He added, “I think it’s imperative that I share my journey with as many people as I can because I don’t feel like my life is about me anymore.”

Eric Dane confirmed his diagnosis shortly before production on Euphoria was scheduled to begin, writing in a statement, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to [the] set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

Prime Video released the first season of Eric Dane’s show Countdown, which costarred Jensen Ackles, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Elliot Knight and Uli Latukefu. Dane played a special agent at the FBI in the series, which was filmed in September 2024.
His costar Ackles later weighed in on the possibility of the show returning for more episodes amid Dane’s health battle before it was ultimately canceled.
“Obviously, he’s dealing with what he’s dealing with. I’m checking in on him quite frequently, letting him know that if there’s anything he needs from me, I’ll be there,” Ackles told Men’s Health in July 2025. “He’s very appreciative, but he’s already surrounded himself with the right people, and that’s important when you’re going through something like that.”
He continued: “I had one of the best times I’ve ever had working on a set while we were on this show. Eric’s a total pro. He’s a TV icon.”

In a sit-down with Diane Sawyer for Good Morning America, Eric Dane offered insight into how he lived with an incurable illness. Dane confirmed he was taking medication for his symptoms and was participating in a research study.
“I’m very hopeful. I don’t think this is the end of my story. I’m pretty resilient,” he said. “I just don’t feel like in my heart that this is the end of me.”

Eric Dane gave a health update after he skipped an appearance at the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards, where he was scheduled to present alongside his former Grey’s Anatomy costar Jesse Williams.
“ALS is a nasty disease. … So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head,” Dane told the Washington Post, revealing that he lost his balance and suffered a fall before the event. “I missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to. It would have been great to see Jesse and get reunited with some of my peers, and to be able to present in front of my colleagues I thought would have been a special moment. So I was really upset about it, but you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”

One month before his death, Eric Dane missed a scheduled appearance due to challenges related to his ALS.
“The ALS Network has been informed that Eric Dane had hoped to join us this evening to accept his Advocate of the Year Award, but due to the physical realities of ALS, he is not well enough to attend,” a spokesperson for the ALS Network shared at the time. “We remain deeply grateful for his courage, advocacy, and continued commitment to the ALS community, and we honor him fully this evening with our profound respect and support.”

Eric Dane’s family confirmed his death at 53 following his battle with ALS.
“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” the statement read. “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always.”
The statement concluded: “Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”
