Have you ever walked into a hotel lobby or spa that smells incredible? Chances are they are scenting the space with sandalwood. Not only is sandalwood a popular fragrance for perfume (we’re looking at you, Le Labo Santal 33) but thanks to its grounding scent, it also makes a great scent for the home, and particularly for candles and reed diffusers.
So, what does sandalwood smell like? Sandalwood is an aromatic wood (and one of the most expensive) which smells warm and woody, yet has a subtle sweetness and floral scent to it. You might have smelled it already in Byredo’s Mojave Ghost and Diptyque’s Tam Dao fragrances. Its subtlety makes it a great base note to mingle with other scents, whether they be floral, citrus or creamy musk notes.
