‘Chucky’ is Coming to Town in Christmas Special Finale

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella make up the company known as Radio Silence. If you’re familiar with the V/H/S franchise then you already know them. If not, they are also the team behind the recent Scream revivals.

It has been announced that their next project will be another reboot, this time from the archives of John Carpenter. In 1981, Kurt Russell starred as Snake, a special forces soldier, who is let loose in the streets of Manhattan Island, now a mass-scale prison, on a mission to save the president.

Carpenter will take on the role of executive producer of this 20th Century Studios production.

Plot details are non-existent at this time, so saying this will be a reboot, remake or requel is too soon to call. Although IMDb is labeling it as a remake. A script has yet to be written.

IMDb is also listing Leigh Whannell as the director. Along with being one of the funny sidekicks in the Insidious franchise, Whannell is also an up-and-coming director.

His 2018 Upgrade was a favorite among fans and his 2020 reboot of The Invisible Man became a litmus test during the pandemic of releasing movies on VOD just weeks after their theatrical runs.

The original film was a qualified success. It made Carpenter was fresh off the moderate success of The Fog. It made $25 million over the course of summer in 1981.

This isn’t the first attempt to remake the action classic. New Line Cinema wanted to do one in 2007, but New Line decided to scrap the project in 2011.

Escape From New York spawned one sequel called Escape From L.A. in 1996 with both Carpenter and Russell returning to their respective roles. That movie wasn’t as successful profit-wise as its predecessor.
