A hippopotamus is beating everything else on Prime Video. Hungry, James Nunn‘s Louisiana swamp creature feature, sat at No. 1 on the service’s US movie chart on October 28, four months after it went to digital, per FlixPatrol.
On the combined Top 10, where series compete too, it lands third, behind The Terminal List season two and Mike Flanagan’s Carrie, which Prime Video renewed two weeks after its premiere.
Madison Davenport leads as a New Orleans woman who books a discounted alligator tour through the bayou, alongside Tracey Bonner, Olivia Bernstone, Michel Curiel and Joaquim de Almeida. The guide detours for a better animal. They find a territorial hippo instead, and it puts them in the water.
Hippos Are Rare in the Animal Attack Movie
Sharks, crocodiles and snakes have carried the subgenre since Jaws, through Lake Placid and Anaconda. The hippo has mostly sat it out, which is strange for an animal that size. Nunn wrote and directed, with Dan Martin on makeup effects, Kenneth Cassar supervising special effects and Magic Dust on visual effects.

The Score Is 52 Percent
That is the critics’ number on Rotten Tomatoes, against 33% from audiences. Signature Entertainment produced the film in the UK, and Aura Entertainment put it in a handful of US theaters on June 3 before the June 23 digital release. The poster is doing more work than the reviews ever did: jaws open at water level, one hand reaching down from a boat that is plainly not going to be enough.
