All the fancy camerawork in the world — and there’s a lot of it in this movie —can’t save Brian De Palma’s The Bonfire of the Vanities from some of the worst casting of any ’90s movie. All three of the lead actors are wrong for their parts; Tom Hanks makes a horrible blue blood, Melanie Griffin brings nothing to the role of his mistress, and Bruce Willis is way too smug and above it all to capture the desperation of his alcoholic journalist character. A movie can recover if one lead performance is bad; when all three are totally wrong, you’ve got a certified disaster.
